Press Release

UNESCO, DISNEY AND MCDONALD'S JOINTLY LAUNCH "MILLENNIUM DREAMERS", OCTOBER 1ST Paris, September 29 {No.99-202} - UNESCO, The Walt Disney Company and McDonald's Corporation are launching a joint initiative October 1st to celebrate the achievements of young people around the globe in the Millennium Dreamers programme, a global search for 2,000 young people who are making a difference in their local communities, an event which takes place in the framework of the International Year for the Culture of Peace. UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor, Disney Chief Executive Officer Michael Eisner and McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Jack Greenberg will officially announce this project in a launch day television broadcast available internationally on the Eutelsat satellite. The Millennium Dreamers contest is open to young people in over 115 countries who, on their own initiative, have made a unique contribution to their community. The 2,000 youngsters chosen will represent their respective countries in an international celebration at Walt Disney World, in Orlando in Florida (United States) from May 8-10, 2000, which will feature a symposium on the theme "Kids inspiring kids for a better tomorrow". By sharing their stories with the media and the world, the young delegates will inspire more people to make their communities a better place and to build a culture of peace. The contest is being run in two age groups, 8 to 12 and 12 to 15-years-old, and winners will be selected based on four criteria: community service, impact of achievement on the community and beyond, creativity of achievement and inspirational value to others. This is the first partnership of its kind between Disney, McDonald's and UNESCO; while Disney and McDonald's are funding and managing the programme, UNESCO's role centres on developing the international and local criteria as well as the educational themes to be discussed at the international symposium next May. ****
